"Da Yie," a short film directed by Anthony Nti, offers a unique and captivating glimpse into life in Ghana through the eyes of two children, Prince and Matilda. The film begins with a promise of fun and adventure but soon transforms into a tense and unsettling narrative.
The story follows Prince and Matilda, two Ghanaian children who, upon meeting a charming stranger named Bogah, embark on a journey that promises new experiences. Initially, Bogah appears to be a friendly guide, taking the children to exciting new places. However, as the journey progresses, his true intentions become clear, and the adventure grows increasingly dark.

One of the film’s greatest strengths is its authenticity. Cinematographer Pieter-Jan Claessens captures the essence of Ghana in a vibrant and realistic manner. Each scene is rich in detail, providing the audience with full immersion into Ghanaian culture and daily life. The performances by Prince Agortey and Matilda Enchill are remarkable, bringing depth and sincerity to their characters that make them extremely compelling. The dynamic between the two young actors is genuine and nuanced, further enhancing the film's emotional impact.
Goua Robert Grovogui, as Bogah, delivers a multifaceted performance, where his initial charisma gradually gives way to an underlying menace. His ability to navigate these aspects of the character keeps the audience in a constant state of suspense.
Nti’s direction is careful and deliberate, exploring complex themes such as innocence and morality in a sensitive and powerful way. The plot unfolds in a manner that surprises the viewer just as much as the children, contributing to an intense and unforgettable climax.
In addition to its engaging narrative, the film’s soundtrack, composed by Maxim Helincks and Milco Geryl, perfectly complements the atmosphere, adding an extra layer of emotion to the cinematic experience. The contemporary music mixed with local sounds creates an auditory environment that enriches the visually impactful story.

"Da Yie" is a brilliant example of how a simple story can be told in a profound and meaningful way. Despite limited resources, the production demonstrates that passion and creativity can overcome any logistical challenges. Anthony Nti and his team have created a film that not only entertains but also offers a deep reflection on child vulnerability and the complexity of human interactions within a socially challenging context.
This short film is a true gem of cinema, highlighting the emerging talent of its creators and the rich culture of Ghana. "Da Yie" is an unforgettable cinematic experience, leaving a lasting impression on the hearts and minds of its viewers.
